The School

The location of our school is on 4664 North Canyon Road, in Provo Utah. In 1991, Money Magazine awarded Provo the #1 city because it is less polluted and the crime is so low for our large population. It has very beautiful mountains. People especially like timpanogasanogos because it looks like an Indian squaw lying down. On timpanogasanogos there is a ski resort called Sundance. That is very popular also. Our school is called Canyon Crest because it is at the crest of the canyon.

At Canyon Crest we have 670 students and 24 teachers. We have some special ed children in our school. We think it is a great opportunity to have special ed children in our school. We really like helping them. We have even learned things from them. Canyon Crest is a cluster school where we bus in children from all over the district.

Canyon Crest is ten years old. Last year we had a celebration with cake and ice cream. When our school first opened children came and planted grass and ate outside because the lunchroom wasn't finished. Since yellow and brown were popular back then we guess, all of our school's cupboards and cabinets are those colors. Brown and gold used to be our school colors until about two years ago when children in a 4th grade class wrote letters to change the school colors to green and blue. Now green and blue are our school colors.

Mr. Morgan, our principal is a big fan of yodeling. After every assembly that we go to, if we are good, then he will yodel for us. Sometimes it is a pleasure. It is an interesting sound, but while some enjoy it, others don't.

Every day, our principal, Mr. Morgan gets on the intercom and tells the school all the important announcements. But the most interesting part about it is every day after he is finished with the announcements, he says, "Make it a great day."

Our principal has many strange and interesting ties. Most principals wear regular, boring ties. But Mr. Morgan our principal, wears cool ties. He has a blinking tie, a Harley tie, and a water tie, and a tie that has a live gold fish in it.

Our principal does many strange things. What we're talking about is his pose. Whenever he is standing, doing nothing he is always in his pose. When he's in his pose, he hooks his hands together and puts them on one hip. He also stands up straight.

Here we can buy school lunch, but some of us bring a sack lunch. The price is different all over the country, but ours costs $1.25. On Monday, we get pizza from Pizza Hut, and there are huge lines!

Canyon Crest's computer lab is one of the best in Provo School District. We have IBM PC2's, and the main computer is an IBM 386. The computer technician's name is Christine Durst, she helps us with problems when we need then solved, and is really good with computers. The programs we work with are Word Perfect; typing and keyboarding, and WICAT math, typing, and reading.

We also have computers in the library and in our classrooms. In the library we have computer catalog that helps us find books more easily. It can also locate books in other places all over the state. We also have an information station where we can gather information from all over the world. In our classrooms we have computers where the teachers keep track of our grades. Computers are very useful in our school, and are used every day!

A Fifth grade teacher at Canyon Crest named Mr. Grass directs a play every year in the winter and in the summer. Some of the plays we have done are; The Wizard of Oz, A Mid Summers Night Dream, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies, Pirates of Pinzance, and we are recently working on Alladin.

The people in our class that have been in one of these plays are: Candice Vernon; Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, and Robin Starviling in a Mid Summers Night Dream. Jenny Redford; Peter Quince in a mid Summers Night Dream, David in Newsies, and Jasmine in Alladin. Shannon Oldroyd; Flounder in The Little Mermaid, and Jafar in Alladin. Ben Wilson; Puck, in A Mid Summers Night Dream, Less in newsies, and Alladin in Alladin. Those are just to name a few.

Grades 4-6 are allowed to participate in these plays, and they always turn out great.

Canyon Crest's Ski program is a six day skiing package that is every Thursday at 1:30. We load on the bus and it takes us up to Sundance Ski Resort. it also includes transportation, half day ski lift passes, two hour lessons, and an hour and a half of free skiing time.

Some people rent skis up at the resort and the rest put theirs in the ski truck at our school. The truck takes them to the resort and back to school.

Two of our school teachers come skiing with us to make sure that we are safe. When we get on the bus to go to the resort or go back to the school the teachers call role to make sure that we are all there on the bus. If we want to go home with a friend, our with our parents we have to have a note signed by a parent.

When we get back to the school, it is about 6:00 and our parents come and pick us up to take us home.

Mr. Morgan, our principal has worked with our sixth grade to have football and basketball tournaments. We have games two times a week for boys and girls in basketball, and we used to in football, but the season is over, and John Sharpe's team took first place. Our sixth grade has fun with Mr. Morgan and we are glad he takes his time to work with us.
